What Are Whole Grains?

You hear in the news about whole wheat, cracked wheat, honey wheat, whole grain wheat and other labels that may have your head spinning. But, what is good for you and what is not?

Whole grains are grains that contain all parts of the seed. Have you ever seen a piece of popcorn before it pops? It is a kernel of corn. There is a hard but thin outer covering. The yellow that you see is the majority of the seed and is underneath this outer covering. At the bottom of the seed is a small portion that is another part entirely.

People still hold some misconceptions about illness and health. Here’s 4 common myths:

1. Mega-doses of vitamin C can make you immune to the common cold. Promoted as a cure-all by the research of Dr. Linus Pauling in the 1950′s, taking large doses of vitamin C for prevention of illnesses has mostly been discredited. Daily doses of vitamin C is important for health but don’t overdo it.

2. Drinking lots of water will help you lose weight. Simply adding water to a normal diet doesn’t stimulate weight loss. Water is important to the health and proper functioning of the body but more water doesn’t mean more weight loss. Taking in enough water to stay hydrated is all your body needs.
